Basel Carnaval

The Basel Carnival is another worthwhile event to visit if you are in Switzerland. Not only are the fun-filled activities the reason for taking part in it, but being listed at the top 50 local events in all of Europe makes it a definite must-see! Basel Fasnacht veterans will mostly advice you to sleep early on the night before the first day of the celebration to witness a spectacular activity at exactly four in the morning of the next day.

On Street Parade

All the lights are switched off and the only illumination can only come from the stars above and the lanterns below. With shouts of ‘Morgestraich vorwärts marsch!,’ the carnival officially begins and everybody is in groups called “cliques,” complete with costumes and performances that are mostly satirical. Aside from that, “Gugge” concerts will surely increase your jovial mood during the day!
